The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has safely and swiftly completed the evacuation of Rifle Correctional Center in response to the Lee Fire in Rio Blanco County. This proactive measure was taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 9, all 179 incarcerated individuals were relocated to the Buena Vista Correctional Complex, outside the fire-affected area. Medical staff are on-site, and no injuries have been reported.

Families and loved ones can communicate with individuals in custody through Securus tablets or the telephone system.

While no incarcerated individuals remain at Rifle Correctional Center, staff are still on-site working with state and local emergency management officials on pre-evacuation measures to safeguard the facility and property.

CDOC appreciates everyone’s patience during this time and continues to work closely with partner agencies to ensure the safety of staff, incarcerated individuals, and the surrounding community.

We will provide additional updates if conditions change.
