The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has begun evacuating 179 individuals in custody from Rifle Correctional Center in
response to the rapidly evolving Lee Fire in Rio Blanco County. Rifle Correctional Center, which opened in 1979, spans 97.73 acres,
includes 24 buildings, and houses up to 192 residents. The facility is currently implementing a coordinated evacuation to ensure the safety of all incarcerated individuals and staff.

In coordination with state and local emergency management officials, CDOC is transferring all incarcerated individuals to other secure facilities outside the fire-affected area to maintain safety and operational continuity. At this time, there are no reports of injuries to staff or incarcerated individuals.

Rifle Correctional Center staff have implemented the facility’s emergency evacuation plan, ensuring the safe transfer of residents with enhanced security and strong coordination among partner agencies.

The Lee Fire has burned more than 75,000 acres in the region, prompting new evacuation orders and precautionary measures across multiple communities. CDOC is closely monitoring conditions and remains ready to take all necessary steps to protect staff, incarcerated individuals, and the surrounding community.

CDOC will provide updates, including information on relocation destinations, when it is appropriate to do so.
