Built in 1991, the Denver Reception and Diagnostic Center (DRDC) is where all CDOC inmates begin their correctional experience.  At DRDC, they are assessed and classified to ensure proper placement in one of the department’s permanent facilities.  DRDC also has a 62-bed transition unit, a 36-bed infirmary, a 12-bed Special Medical Needs Unit (SMNU), and approximately 96 permanently assigned inmates in general population housing, some of whom receive dialysis care at DRDC in the facility’s auxiliary Dialysis Unit.  DRDC has a total bed capacity of 570.
